PATRICK
REILLY
PHOTOGRAPHER
Began photographing in the 1960s as a
boy, who caught the fever when he learnt
how to develop film. A major turning point
came in 1974.
“I was in London and I went to see
a show at the Photographers Gallery it
included work by W Eugene Smith and Don
Mc Cullin and it really was inspirational
to see work of the highest calibre.
That was it, I was hooked and I have been
photographing ever since. I still work
with film cameras and traditional darkroom
techniques. I try to make images with
impact that’s what is truly important.
I have photographed on my travels to Eastern
Europe, Cuba, etc. I take pictures in
my home town. The great challenge is to
produce something interesting and take
inspiration from the late JAMES RAVILIOUS,
who said it is not ordinary,
it is extraordinary. You can
travel to exotic places and get good photographs,
But the real challenge is to get pictures
in your own backyard. It all comes down
to your eye. To photograph your own country
is a great challenge, but an exciting
one.
Most
of my photographs are made with Leica
rangefinder cameras, with 24, 35 and 50mm
lenses.I
also use a hassselblad and a mamiya 7
and 400 asa tri x and delta 400 film.”
“PHOTOGRAPHY takes an instant
out of time altering life by holding it
still” - DOROTHEA LANGE
